Abstract The Virginia Master Cattlemen program has the goal to provide beef producers with essential knowledge in areas of production. Every year, from VA and neighboring states participate this comprehensive 14-hour long program. During 2021 program, we performed an online survey participants addressing their reproductive management practices. We have obtained data 133 participants, which 67.7% indicated operations a defined breeding season. Of those, 41.1% reported length season be less than 70 days. Best Management Practices for Small Beef Cow-Calf Herds - FSA3117
Results from the Arkansas Beef Audit indicated producers with small cowcalf herds placed a high value on the lifestyle, and it was clear from the findings that they managed their herds as much for heritage’s sake – or family legacy – as for profitability. This group understood they make up the largest volume of beef producers in Arkansas and indicated the belief that the public had a posi tiv...
متن کاملBull management for cow/calf producers
Fertility in a bull is generally defined as the ability to impregnate females. Certainly that is a minimum requirement, but a bull with high fertility is able to impregnate more than the expected number of cows in a short breeding season. Such a bull has greater economic value than one of lesser fertility (1,17). If the bull also has a desirable genetic background, it could contribute more than...
متن کاملCow-calf reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management to improve the sustainability of whole beef production systems.
Optimizing efficiency in the cow-calf sector is an important step toward improving beef sustainability. The objective of the study was to use a model to identify the relative roles of reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management in minimizing beef production systems' environmental impact in an economically viable, socially acceptable manner. An economic and environmental diet optimizer was...
متن کاملCOW/CALF MANAGEMENT Minimizing Calving Difficulty in Beef Cattle
Calving difficulty (dystocia) contributes heavily to losses in production in beef cow/calf herds. The obvious losses are due to calves or cows that die at or soon after calving. Less noticeable losses are due to delayed rebreeding, more open females, an extended calving season and increased labor costs. While occasional dystocia is almost unavoidable, through proper management, cattlemen can mi...
